Japanese Social Anxiety Disorder patient being abused
***Transcript is at the end***
A family hired a self-proclaimed “social worker” to take care of a 27 year-old Hikikomori (socially withdrawn) daughter who has retired herself in her parents home for 6 years.
Instead of intervening in her early stage of recluse and taking her for a psychiatrist to screen her for underlying mental diseases such as Social Anxiety Disorder, Depression, PTSD, Schizoid personality disorder, Avoidant personality disorder, Asperger syndrome, Agoraphobia, Autism spectrum disorder or Attention-Deficit-Disorder, they finally decided to take a drastic method: They handed down their responsibility to a sadistic money-greedy phony who asked her parents/sisters to hit their daughter/sister and humiliate a highly probable mentally-ill patient in front of a Japanese national television. (Later a “patient” died in her inpatient facility while being handcuffed and chained. Subsequently she was prosecuted and sentenced for 3 and a half years.)
Sadly this video demonstrates two things. 1) How poor the psychiatric literacy of an?average Japanese is.
2) The anger the family exudes against the poor girl, comes from the shame the girl brought to the family for the last 6 years. Their neighborhood, relatives, friends, coworkers would have talked against their back instead of supporting them; that their parents were spoiling her, etc. The family went thru that shame and now their lashing it out on the poor girl in front of TV to regain face.
Japanese people are highly sensitive on how they appear on other people’s eyes. This is b/c Japanese traditionally adopts scare/prohibitory tactics to teach, i.e. you must not do this b/c people will scold you. In other words they don’t care about what the fundamental problem is, but on how they appear and how to get themselves off the hook from people’s scrutiny. That’s why the Japanese are quick to apologize or smile. The mentality is to give a facade of repentance even if you don’t care, and the trouble will go; they don’t like confrontation. My take is that this attitude comes from the hierarchical system of the medieval times when Samurai (servant) used to pledge allegiance to his feudal lord. What your lord asks is imperative. Unlike Europeans for which God is the absolute moral code, that of the Japanese is other people’s random values. This type of blind allegiance is what the Europeans fought against in the French Revolution. The Japanese never had a civil revolution against the authorities to win civil rights like our European friends. We had it handed down by the Americans after the Pacific War. In fact till the U.S. Navy compelled Japan to open to the west in 1854, Japan was a closed nation (ironically like Hikikomori) for a few centuries. Now the nation only got out of its reclusive life for less than 200 years.
Japan is no advanced country. The country has advanced industry but the people’s mindset is still limited and medieval. They never had a breakthrough revolution on their own. They had it easy. This country only has tamed humanoids with good rote memory and engineering skills. 10% are successful foreign demand firms, the rest are obsolete educators, greedy civil servants/politicians leeching on political interests, and downhill internal demand firms.
This video is the omen of the future of the ever-stagnating Japan.
